What?

For this project, I explored Apple's accessibility features and created a screencast demonstrating the Live Speech tool. Live Speech allows users to type messages that are spoken aloud by the device, providing an alternative means of communication for individuals who have difficulty speaking. Through this project, I learned how to access, enable, and demonstrate the feature while gaining a better understanding of how accessibility tools can support communication and learning.

So What?

This project aligns with ISTE Educator Standard 2.1a: Learner, which encourages educators to pursue professional learning by exploring new technologies and reflecting on how they can improve teaching and learning. Before this assignment, I understood the purpose of accessibility features but had never explored the tools available on my own devices because I did not think I needed them. Completing this project showed me that many of these features are easy to use and have the potential to remove barriers for students with diverse needs.

My previous experience working as a one-to-one instructional aide for a non-speaking student with autism helped me appreciate the importance of assistive technology. This project reinforced that educators do not need to know every accessibility feature in advance, they simply need to be willing to learn, explore available tools, and identify technology that can support student success.

Now What?

This project changed the way I view accessibility. Instead of seeing these features as tools I would rarely use, I now recognize them as valuable resources every educator should understand. As I continue teaching, I will explore the accessibility features available on the devices my students use and consider how those tools can be incorporated into instruction and, when appropriate, included as supports within a student's IEP.
